    A US e-commerce retailer was looking for a new Managing Director to further scale their Japan business and eventually drive their IPO.

    The client had high expectations. The ideal candidate for the MD role would have a strong track record in the luxury space and outstanding leadership skills while fitting well into the client’s entrepreneurial company culture. Another challenge would be the client’s relatively low brand recognition combined with the notorious risk aversity of Japanese candidates especially when it comes to foreign startups.

    From previous experience we knew that the client’s ideal candidate profile would be very difficult to find in Japan. To gain a full overview of the luxury market, we put together a team of 4, including the lead consultant and 3 dedicated researchers who started to map out the space. During the search we discovered that the industry was rather conservative, and most people wouldn’t fit the client’s startup culture and values.

    Based on our data and consultation the client decided to turn the focus of the role to Brand Management and end-to-end Marketing, a move that opened them up for a much more promising talent pool. Since we had spoken with over 200 luxury candidates of all calibers, we were able to quickly produce 8 candidates the client wanted to meet.

    Within only a month of changing the search criteria, the client was able to onboard a highly experienced, nimble and proactive luxury superstar who had seemed to be an out-of-the-box candidate at the very beginning of the search but was in reality a perfect match for the company’s needs and culture.
