Pushing limits to achieve greatness
Avani Manish Shah, Associate Consultant – On-site Hiring Process Consulting & Management
With 4 years of professional recruiting experience across various regions and an MBA in Human Resources, Avani is a thoroughbred hiring professional.
“I started my career in Mumbai with an internship at a recruitment company that was focused on the Middle East. At the beginning, scouting candidates was a huge challenge for me since I am an introvert and talking to lots of people didn’t come easy to me. But that’s exactly why I went into recruitment. I wanted to grow. And, I knew that I can only grow by pushing my limits.
Despite spending the first weeks of the internship outside of my comfort zone, I got used to it after a while and even started to enjoy getting to know new people every day. That’s why I decided to stay when I got a full-time offer from the company I had served my internship at.”
After having spent several months recruiting for the Middle East in Mumbai, Avani decided to go to Pune to get closer to her family again.
“Back in Pune I first worked for a company that was specialized in recruiting for the US market. It was fascinating since the people I was talking to now were very different from the people I had targeted in my previous company. That actually made me curious about my home market India, so I moved into a domestic Indian recruiting firm.
To be honest, speaking with Indian candidates was surprisingly difficult (laughs). I had no experience whatsoever and the way domestic companies operate is quite different from international firms. However, it gave me great exposure to Indian companies and I was able to learn and manage the full recruiting process end to end. In addition, I could further expand my knowledge of tech positions since my main task was to recruit IT back office people for a domestic food retailer.”
Although she had covered most of the big global markets, Avani felt that there was one important market missing.
“I love challenges and I want to try new things if possible every single day. My motto has always been‘Explore the unexplored!’ (laughs).
Speaking of exploring, until that point I had explored the US, the Middle East and my own home market India. The only market I hadn’t experienced yet was Asia. So, I got really curious and started to look for opportunities that would enable me to work with that region.”
That’s when a friend referred the Boyd & Moore Intelligence Center (BMIC) to her.
“I thought it would be just another recruiting company, similar to the ones I had worked for before. But then, when going through the interview process I recognized that things were different at the BMIC.
One big difference was the type of position I was applying for: On-site Hiring Process Management & Consulting. I learned that I would support Consultants in Japan who’re working at the client’s office managing the hiring process and advising the client on how to improve it. That sounded really interesting.
In addition, I felt that the processes at the BMIC are rather sophisticated and well maintained.”
This initial feeling turned out to be true and posed some challenges on Avani after joining the company at the end of 2017.
“It took me a while to figure out how things are done here. I was used to managing the entire process by myself in my own way, but Boyd & Moore has specialists for different tasks and clearly defined processes so that we don’t need to do everything by ourselves.
Right from the start, I received training not only from my manager here in India but also from the team in Japan. Initially I found it quite challenging to understand how they’re working and what my role would be, but continuous and smooth communication helped me overcome these challenges and integrate myself quickly into the team.”
Despite her initial struggle, Avani first success came quickly after only 2 months.
“The Consultant I am supporting was working on a role that was tough to fill since the client was looking for a specific set of technical skills and background. We both were intensively searching for candidates, but we couldn’t seem to find the right fit.
But then, only after 2 months in this job one of the candidates I had referred got placed for this niche role. The team leader in Japan was very happy with the result and sent me a note of appreciation. I felt very proud.”
Avani thinks that BMES is the right place to not only grow her skills but also follow her personal passion.
“I am learning a lot. As an Associate Consultant here at Boyd & Moore I am able to speak with people around the world. I am given the independence to manage my own work but there’s also always someone I can reach out to when I get stuck.
Of course, you need to be willing to push for the things you want. However, at the same time the atmosphere is very relaxed and friendly, so it’s a great environment to try new things and grow yourself. I, for example, want to expand my scope beyond the current tech account I am working for. I have already started to spend time supporting other projects.
I am also able to maintain a great work-life balance. We have long holidays twice a year which gives me time to travel which I love.
It’s just a fantastic place to work at. In the morning I never feel like not going to work. I think that says a lot (laughs).”
The BMIC is always looking for people who love to explore new markets and connect with people around the world. If that sounds like you, please check our current openings.

Now or Never
I felt that Boyd & Moore was doing something different from other call centers. I wasn’t quite sure what, but I was curious enough to give it a shot and join.
Mr. Consistency
I realized that I would be able to go to Tokyo if I’d just work hard enough. Compared to the company I had worked in as an engineer the career chances and the speed in which I could reach my goals were so much better at BMES…
You can’t make a dish with only one spice
I thought BMES would be similar to all the other recruiting firms in India. I kind of knew that they were an international executive search firm, but I had no idea what that actually meant.
