Pre-IPO US-based pet food firm needed VP to begin Asia operations
A fast-growing US-based pet food company was looking to launch its first international market as part of its pre-IPO strategy. The company had not done any business outside of North America. They were looking for both their first hire on the ground and further insight into how best to enter and grow their APAC business.
As part of an insular and highly niche market there would be only a very limited candidate pool. Additionally, as both a private company and startup, they did not have the brand recognition necessary to attract top talent as they had in their home markets. Therefore, our role was to map the entire market, not just for purposes of identifying talent pool but to assess relative strength of potential competitors.
Our initial market mapping took approximately a month from which we were able to identify 3 qualified senior candidates. The client was able to onboard their preferred candidate, the Chairman of the Japan Pet Food Association – a highly strategic hire who was able to bring immediate business to the client and initiate the building of a strong Japan organization.
By advising on non-competition issues, equity allocation, company establishment, as well as handling all client payroll issues for the new business, we have continued to add value to the client to ensure a highly successful market entry.
US biotech startup required full market entry support for business setup & hiring
A US-based biotech startup was looking to enter the APAC market. They needed to establish an entity, locate office space, and make their first critical hire for whom they required payroll services. The ideal leader of the new entity would need experience with sales management, distributor and customer management, branding and scaling an operation.
We established a team of 3 dedicated Researchers to assist our lead Consultant in identifying the ideal candidate. At the same time we worked with the client to find an office location while advising them on minimizing their cost exposure as well as local employment standards.
As we continued the search we found that much of the market was highly interested in the client’s technology but were generally more concerned at the perceived risk of joining a startup in a relatively crowded market. The search required heavy lifting on the research side to methodically cover all prospective target companies and candidates.
In the end, our successful hire met the client’s expressed requirements having spent 15+ years in global biotechnology firms handling related technology and in the process having developed superior connections with the client’s current distributor
